about

"It's a song about conflict and resolve, loves lost and hard won, fading memories, and a lingering, bittersweet sense of self-righteousness."
Jez Bernholz

The duo of Neil Arthur from Blancmange and solo artist Bernholz are currently working on their second album - the follow up to 2018’s Ideal Home which was described as ‘urban poetry for the English edge-lands' by Uncut and ‘stately, almost luminous’ according to The Quietus.

‘Sacrifice' is arguably their most beautiful track to date, originally an idea created by Bernholz towards the end of 2018. ‘It was executed in one improvised take during an intensely foggy, fraught evening. After a long gestation period, Neil worked on the track and added vocals. Life during the pandemic also ‘inspired’ a few lyrical changes and it all fell into place. One of those tracks that genuinely felt like it just wrote itself.’

Neil remembers his first reaction when he heard the song. . .
‘goosebumps, hair raising, chicken tits (as one of my friends calls the emotional physical response). The vocal and lyric was delivered in such a way it still holds me, almost spellbound, locked in a strange loop.’

Arthur added some backing vocals and ‘subtle synth peaks’ and the music became the first completed work for the new album which will hopefully be released in 2021.

The 'B' side is a cover of Kraftwerk's 'Ohm Sweet Ohm', a track on their 1975 album Radio-Activity.
